a lovely period home that was built at the turn of the 19th century
Our clients Brian and Kirsty of Broadview, South Australia have a lovely period home that was built to last at the turn of the 19th century, like so many homes within the inner Adelaide districts. Some ten years before Brian and Kirsty first contacted us, their home had already been sympathetically extended; adding a large family living area and bedrooms to the back. The kitchen was however not touched at that time and was sitting on its own, enclosed within its three walls, tucked in back from the rest of the new living space. Brian and Kirsty now wanted to make their kitchen more open and connect it more into this new open Living area whereby bringing these rooms together as one common area and making their Kitchen a more spacious, sociable connected space for their growing young family.
For this Adelaide Kitchen Renovation, Brian and Kirsty selected Federation style Shaker Doors to match in with the existing joinery throughout their home and this suiting the Period of their Architecture. They then also chose for us to finish these Shaker Style Doors in a White Satin Two-Pack and dressed these with more modern Satin Stainless Steel Cuffia handles and modern style appliances to make a Transitional Style Shaker Kitchen. These still complemented the period of their home while also giving their functional new Kitchen a slightly more modern feel.
Our clients added to this style Stainless Steel Appliances plus a Bowed Glass canopy rangehood and Glass Splashbacks. They selected a hidden Miele Fully Integrated Dishwasher so not to break the line of the cabinets where we also set this Dishwasher Front up as Drawer fronts instead of using one single panel to further hide their dishwasher. Instead of Tiles and Grout, they also added to this design with their selection of affordable, easy to clean Opti-clear Glass Splashbacks, of which they finished with a traditional Edwardian Federation Period Colour from the era; being a Dulux Claret as was already in use on the internal cove of their original Edwardian Plaster Cornices.
Typical of this period, Brian and Kirsty also chose to use square Plynth Bases to their peninsula bar, a Belfast Sink and incorporated in with their twinner Taps a separate Hi-Flow filtered water system. Our clients also chose to use lots of tall Overhead and Pantry storage at 2400mm high, and incorporating obscured glass doors where here they chose to use Viridian Narrow Reeded Glass panels as was typically used in Kitchen Dresser Furniture of that period, and choosing to do this so to break up the solid look while also adding points of interest to this efficient Shaker Kitchen Design.
We added features such as 6 deep pot drawers with Blum Full Extension Runners for added easy to access storage, Built-in slide-out Rubbish Bins, Vertical storage for Trays, and a sliding Two-Tiered Cutlery Tray for extra storage. We designed into the layout a hideaway Microwave Oven unit so not to detract from this period look, as well as integrated Wine Racks, a large Glass front Pantry, Two Tambour Roll-Front Appliance cabinets to hide away their Mixer, Blender and Coffee Machine and Microwave but still allow easy access when they were needed and we created lots of easy access storage elsewhere.
We completed this refined Kitchen Renovation for Brian and Kirsty with their selection of the highly resilient, premium Quantum Quartz Benchtops in a Mocha colour called “Silky” with this Reconstituted Stone material being very hygienic, easy to care for, totally waterproof, very hard wearing and as well as being beautiful is a great work surface for making pastry and baking.
